When Should You Renew Your ACS?

• Expired ACS? You’ll be classed as an ‘initial’ candidate
• Renewal cost: £750 ex-VAT
• Extra time: An additional 1–2 days may be required for paperwork

If your ACS gas qualifications expired more than 12 months ago, you’ll need to complete your ACS reassessment as an initial candidate. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean starting from scratch or completing a portfolio. We’ll just complete a quick test to see where you’re currently at. If you’re ready, you can go straight into the ACS renewal assessment. If not, we’ll recommend targeted refresher training to get you back up to speed.

When Can I Sit My ACS Renewal?

• An ACS renewal can be taken up to six months early

It’s essential not to leave renewing your ACS gas qualification too late, as when your certificate expires, you are no longer legally allowed to work on gas installations and appliances or be listed on the Gas Safe register. To help protect your ability to work legally, you can resit your ACS renewal up to six months before the expiry date, without affecting the anniversary of your certification (unless you add a new module to your certification).

And don’t panic if you’ve forgotten to renew until the last minute, as we can also offer a ‘fast track’ process, which will help speed up the processing of your paperwork at the certification body. Please note that an extra fee is payable to the certification body for this service, through us.

ACS Course FAQs

What happens if my ACS expires?

You cannot legally work with gas without a current ACS certificate. If your ACS has expired for less than 12 months, you can still take a standard reassessment. If it’s been over 12 months, you’ll be classed as an ‘initial’ candidate and may require additional paperwork or training before reassessment. Either way, the MGE Training team will help you get your qualification up to date.

What are the benefits of an ACS renewal?

Renewing your ACS keeps you legally certified to work on gas – this is vital if your income and living rely on your continued ability to work with gas. It protects your place on the Gas Safe Register, ensures you stay compliant with regulations and shows employers or clients you’re up to date with industry standards.

What documents do I need to bring?

You’ll need to bring a valid photo ID (passport or driving licence) and a copy of your current or previous ACS certificate. If your certificate has expired for over 12 months, we may also require proof of your previous experience. We’ll confirm any extras you need to bring before your ACS renewal reassessment date.

When do your ACS (CCN1) courses run?

We offer weekday courses and also weekend and evening reassessments to suit your schedule. Whether you’re renewing as standard or coming back after a lapse, we’ll help you book a slot that fits around your working hours. Call or email us to find the next available session.

How is the ACS course assessed?

The ACS reassessment includes both written and practical elements. You’ll be tested on your core gas safety knowledge and appliance-specific modules in our controlled training environment. Our experienced assessors, who have spent time ‘on the tools’ themselves, will guide you through to ensure you’re fully prepared and confident before the assessment.

Where is your ACS reassessment course based?

All ACS gas qualifications take place at our fully equipped training centre in Tipton, West Midlands, just a 30-minute drive from Birmingham city centre and easily accessible from all over the region. We welcome engineers from all over, with free on-site parking and flexible scheduling options to make attending as convenient as possible, whether you’re local or travelling in.
