Guidance note 38 (GS38)
Electrical test equipment for use on low voltage electrical systems
This guidance note is aimed at people (including electricians, electrical contractors, test supervisors, technicians, managers, tradespeople and/or appliance retailers/repairers etc) who use electrical test equipment on low voltage electrical systems and equipment.
The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require those in control of all or part of an electrical system to ensure it is safe to use and maintained in a safe condition.
The Regulations permit few circumstances where it is acceptable for live working activities to be carried out on electrical equipment or systems, this includes electrical testing and fault finding. Wherever possible, all work on electrical systems should be carried out with the system dead. This includes electrical testing where dead tests are often as effective as live measurements. This document provides advice and guidance on how to achieve this.
Guidance note 3
Guidance for electricians in a simplified step by step procedure on inspection and testing used for all electrical courses.
Guidance Note 3: Inspection & Testing is a fundamental guidance book for all those involved with the testing and inspection of electrical installations. It also contains essential guidance for those studying for inspection and testing qualifications and has been fully updated to BS 7671:2018. The 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations published in July 2018 and came into effect in January 2019. Changes from the previous edition include requirements concerning Surge Protection Devices, Arc Fault Detection Devices and the installation of electric vehicle charging equipment as well as many other areas.
The On-Site Guide is an essential guide to BS 7671. It incorporates the extensive changes in BS 7671:2018, making this a vital guide for keeping up to date. It enables the competent electrician to deal with installations (up to 100 A, 3-phase) providing essential information in a convenient, easy-to-use format. The 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations published in July 2018 and came into effect in January 2019. Approved Document P contains guidance on electrical safety in dwellings, including detailed information about what procedures need to be in place and who may carry these out, such as when a professional electrician must be hired. Those undertaking electrical works must be considered “competent”, having a complete and proficient understanding of electrical fittings and are able to check safety circuits.
The document details electrical safety to avoid injuries and fires caused by electrical installations, including the design, installation, inspection and testing of any electrical works made within a dwelling.
This document is required for the CPS assessment.
